Rolling Stock Project
Siemens Combino PIS Upgrade
Project Overview
Project Client: Yarra Trams
Year of Completion: 2016
SCG was engaged by Yarra Trams to support solving the issue of unreliable (therefore unutilised) Passenger Information System on board the Siemens Combino fleet of trams. SCG eventually managed the procurement, prototype & design validation, fleet-roll-out installation, testing and commissioning of a passenger information system upgrade across the fleet of 59 x Siemens Combino trams for Yarra Trams (YT). SCG also coordinated engagement with PIS OEM in Germany – for technical support & training, as well as necessary software/memory upgrades to enable YT/SCG to turn this system into a workable/useable platform.
SCG supported YT, engineering the design authority with practical design and integration of wiring looms, new and accurate positioning system (using gyroscopes, dead-reckoning functionality, as well as input from the tram’s tachymeter unit), as well as bracket designs and local manufacturing of PCB interface board (allowing the new positioning system to integrate with the existing/original tram PIS). In parallel to the hardware integration (carried out at night across two depot locations), SCG also rolled out software and memory upgrades to the GSP hardware, as well as PIS updated database for latest routes, stops, special events test & audio messages.
SCG was also responsible for detailed testing and commissioning reports (ITP’s, T&C report per vehicle, on-line testing & validations) and coordination with all stakeholders (YT Communications, Lines/Operations, Depot Starters & Maintenance, Engineering, electrical fitters/contractors, fabricators (PCB boards, brackets, wiring loom fabrication & terminations).
